Default Working on own Mini. Spark plugs & oil changes

Since we are now a 2 Mini family. '08 Clubman S & '05 cool blue convertible. I believe it may be time to start working on our own cars. I just completed changing plugs & wires on the '05. How easy was this? My wife said she could have done it and she does not work on cars. My question is what is one of the best fix it manuals to purchase. Also what work do you do on your own car that any do it yourselfer can do? I cannot change an engine but can fix most normal car problems. The Mini dealers seem to try and intimidate you into letting them fix it do to resetting codes, sensors etc. Mechanics let me know what you do and what you think. I love my 08 S fast and quick + 30 mpg.
