Default Fuel pump running, no key in ignition???

Hi everybody,

I have an odd question. I have a 2005 Mini S, and I had driven it earlier in the day. I had turned it off, locked it up and took off in another vehicle. I returned later, and when I walked up to the car I heard the fuel pump running???? Sounded like the fuel pump to me, it had that high pitch whine to it. So I jumped in and turned on the ignition, and turned it back off. The pump was no longer running at that point. Today I went to drive the car the battery is dead. Any ideas?? Any advice helps thanks.

Are you SURE it's the fuel pump and not the power steering pump ??? I've heard of the power steering relay sticking and staying on ... I guess the relay from the fuel pump could be sticking on as well

I had no idea it has an electric steering pump. Do you know if it has an electric water pump as well? Thanks!

Would you recommend the Haynes manual for this vehicle, or is there a more detailed technical manual out there? Thanks

So it turns out, you were right about it being the power steering pump that was running the other day not the fuel pump...good call. So how would one get a hold of the BMW manual for it?? Are you a tech for them, and that's how you got it? I'm looking right now, but skeptical about getting ripped off. Thanks for all of your help.

I picked up my manual off of EBAY ... Also on Ebay there is a company that rebuilds the power steering pump ...
And this place as well:
US Headquarters:
BBA Remanufacturing Inc
300 Myles Standish Blvd
Taunton, MA 02780
United States
+1 508 822 4490
Fax +1 508 822 4491
us-sales@bba-reman.com

I think it's $200 and a lifetime warranty ...
Mini's cost is around $700

Thanks. I took th e Mini down today, and the dealer agreed to replace for free since I have only had the car for less than a week. Next time the pump goes though, I'm definitely sending it to the guys in Mass.
