Default I'm obviously not a sea captain

Okay, last night I drove my 2003 R50 into a puddle. It was about 7 or 8 inches deep. My Cooper stalled. I tried to restart and it turned over a few times but eventually the starter wouldn't turn. All I hear is a loud click and the headlights flash. I tried several times so I may have drained the battery. It's still out there in the parking lot and I've got it hooked up to a trickle charger. Does anyone have any idea if the starter could be damaged from water? Or maybe you know of another problem? It's still storming outside so I don't think that helps either. Anyone ever had a similar problem and perhaps the car was just too wet?
