Default Low brake pad light on...?

Hi all... I'm trying to help my friend in sorting out his newly acquired Mini Cooper. It's a 2002 Non S and this yellow circle with three dashes on each side is constantly on. We've used google and I've learned a bunch as to what the light actually is being originally we had not a clue...! Well here's the dilemma... The pads are new all around, and there are absolutly no brake pad sensors. No wiring, no old plug where the wiring would have been, nothing....?? Then I've read somewhere Mini's before a certian 2003 production date didn't come w the brake pad sensors... So why in the world would the light still be on...?? I've also tried the key in position 2 for over a minute reset, no luck either...? We're baffled. Thanks so much for reading and any input...!!

My friend of ours confirmed that Coopers built before 3/2003 did not have brake pad sensors using his ALLDATA.

Is there anything else that would turn on that light...?

Before 3/2003 there was not brake pad sensors.

Must be the abs light trifecta: ABS , DSC, TPMS = Possible bad ABS sensor.

Update: I had a guy come and scan the car to reprogram the BCM. Turns out somewhere prior / previous owner also changed the instrument cluster bc the vins did not match there either. The instrument cluster is from a 2006 which explains the low brake pad sensor light, that he couldn't put out. So it looks like we're in the market for a 2002 instrument cluster. Thanks ECS for the input / help.

Thanks for the update.

You will need s new cluster, dont think a used one or order one will work. I had a issue with the clock and had to get a new one uncoded and then MINI coded to VIN. Then everything worked fin.

This guy who programs everyone around (body shops, auto repair shops, tuners, etc) assured me it's no problem to code the used cluster. He basically has the same equipment as the BMW / Mini dealers. He also told me the used instrument cluster should work fine without a program re-coding to match vins. Only way someone would even be able to tell was if they had the same equipment as him as went into the car. I don't know why everyone on e-bay lists instrument clusters as 2002-2008 being compatible since that is defiantly not the case...!!! The tenth digit in the vin tells you what year the cluster is if the person selling it even has the donor cars vin # still. Just throwing out some info I'm learning along the way. I'm usually on the RX-7 forums myself and always appreciate searching and actually finding what I need. I'll post back results as soon as I get the new / used cluster in.

Thanks for the update, on the reprogram an old Tach you might get a mis-match error or the tamper red button might show up on the cluster. I would be wary of a shop non MINI Dealership doing this. That's why MINI has a new tach and then program it to vin.
