Default Crank shaft pulley problem

Driving down the Interstate, I suddenly heard a squeal. It sounded like a loose belt. Immediately, the "check engine soon" light came on. Immediately after that, my engine died. Coasting now at 75 mph, I turned the key off and cranked it right back up. I drove another 75 miles to my mechanic's who said the alternator belt had gone bad and, sadly, damaged the crank shaft pulley. I have only 32,000 miles on this car. I've never heard of this happening. I called the dealer. He said, it happens. And my car is 6 months out of warranty. My question is, does this really happen? Or am I confronting a to which the dealer doesn't want to admit? I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this issue.
