Default 2009 Cooper S - replacing stock Boost CD stereo

My radio recently stopped working and lost power. I brought it to my local Indy shop today, and they told me that the radio shorted out inside and it needed to be replaced. They are telling me it's the brain part with is the CD boost section of the radio.

I can find a replacement on ebay for much cheaper than the dealer which is who they would have to get it from. I asked if they could install it for me, they said they could but that it would be $384. Some of this cost is for programming it.

So my question is does this need to be reprogrammed once installed, say if I wanted to install it myself? Is there something else that would make it not work if I did it myself or is this something I should leave to them?

Thanks in advance
