Default iPod connection problem

2008 Clubman S. I have the dealer installed iPod connection and 160GB iPod video about half full. Every few weeks the connection drops and the iPod freezes. I have it set to play alphabetically by album title. This morning it was working fine, stopped the car, went for a walk and on return no iPod and it had defaulted to radio. Any ideas?
