2003 mini cooper- new to me!

just got a 2003 mini and am hearing alot of different sounds. Funny sound like a grinding almost when I take a turn. My temp gauge has been mostly at half until today I sat idle waiting for almost 30 mins and it went to almost 100 with the red light on. What is that....is it normal?
