Check engine light with letters "EP"

My check engine light came on in my 2005 Mini no S (auto) In the speedometer the letters "EP" came up where the "D" for Drive is located. Does anyone know what this means, I called service but they want me to bring it in "$". If i can fix I will. If I took my Mini in everytime the check engine light came on I would never drive it. Any Ideas?

Have you checked the owners manual ?
Taken it and have the codes pulled ?
