Default 08 cooper getting 100mpg?!?

bought an 08 mini cooper last night and had 1 mile
drove it home with a full tank of gas and even drove it to school.
odometer says i have travelled 106 miles but my tank is still full
it's got 10 notches and owners manual says it only takes 10.6 gallon...
so is my odometer broke or what?!?
i looked at the mpg display and it was showing 66mpg-99.99 mpg?
i hope i'm not running on empty.

The first thing I would do is go to the gas station and fill it up. This way you will know how far off your actual tank gauge is, if it is off at all. I am pretty sure the tank size on a 2008 Mini hardtop is 13.2 gallons, not 10.6 gallons. You will also have to reset the on board computer by following the instructions in the manual. This will zero it out so it can start calculating with a full tank. You will also need to zero out the odometer so you can do the calculation manually when the tank is empty (Actually you fill it up again when it gets down to two bars, and allow the new tank to go down two bars, then do the math). The computers are usually off by a few mpg (Mine is off by aprox. 4.64 mpg), so you want to do it manually as well until you know what it really is.

I went 510 miles on a single tank of gas, so getting 106 miles out of a tank before at least one of them light bars goes dark does seem a little strange to me too.

If you follow these simple steps you will find where the problem is.

Also, make sure you check your tire pressure, and when you have them all where you need them to be, reset the tire monitoring gauge so it will know if you have a flat, or if they are too low (If you still have the run flats that is).

Happy Motoring!

Yeah, it's just the extra gas in the filler tube and stuff... it's normal.

I usually go between 70 and 90 miles on the odometer before the first bar goes out. I reset the ODO religiously, habit carried over from motorcycling.

I have noticed this on nearly every car I have owned. The first bar will usually stay on longer however, through the cycle of gas you will notice that as you use up more gas the lines will go out faster as the tank gets lower.

I zero out the odometer at each fill up which helps not only track how many miles per tank but if I notice unusually low miles I can check the basics...tire pressure, air filter...etc...etc...

I am a new owner with an 07 hard top CooperS auto and so far have been very impressed by the gas mileage. Not only is this car loads of fun but quite efficient. What more can you ask for! [8D]

I always reset the odometer and check mileage with each tank. Most of the time I get 34-35 in mixed driving but on a recent trip the car got 38.5 mpg on back to back fill ups. I have been very impressed with the performance and fuel economy of this car. This is THE car to have with the current fuel costs.

I've heard they are heavier causing slight mileage loss ...
