Audio sound problem

No sound from system even though it shows its on. Have been informed it is possibly the amplifier in the rear. Also been informed it costs an arm & a leg to replace, Harmon Kardon i do believe , any cheaper solutions. Can a new head unit be fitted without amplifier.
