Considering buying a 2007 Mini Cooper S 6 speed manual with 147,000 miles

Car is a couple hours away but pics look good, car fax looks good, and price is reasonable and in my price range since I'll only use it for around town, Never had a mini or known anyone that had one but I really want one. I've seen good and bad researching these vehicles. Wanted to know what to look for when checking it out and if these cars are known to be good over 150,000 miles with no major problems.

Welcome to MINI Cooper Forums, Asphalt. I'd honestly steer clear of the 2007 model R56. I'd at least go for an '08+. If you can afford it, you'd probably be better off with a 2011-2013 MINI Cooper S. They have the upgrades N18 engine (2007-2010 MINI Cooper S has the N14). The N18 doesn't have as many issues as the N14, but it still has its quirks. If you decide you want to go with the 2007 here is what to look out for:

The death rattle (timing chain/tensioner issue)
HPFP failure
Steering lock issue
Valve cover crack issue
Turbo oil line leak
Carbon cleaning (needs to be done every 50k miles)
VANOS issues (not as common, but have seen more than a few)
Oil leaks and coolant leaks (thermostat, water pump)

You can also read up on these common issues/fixes at our tech articles here: Mini Cooper S R56 (2007-Present) Technical Articles | DIY Guides for maintenance and Repair of Mini Cooper S model years 2007-present | Pelican Parts.

It is not a bad idea to get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a qualified MINI shop. That way you will know what issues it may have. I'd also ask for all service records so you know what has been replaced and what may cause you an issue in the future. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the detailed reply Pelican Parts! They are asking $5500 and I'm hoping to get closer to $5000. There is a Mini dealer in that town, I'll bring it to them to check it out and see if the service records are in their system. Thanks again.

IF it has a new clutch installed recently, $5K is a good price. My 09 has 95K miles on it & the clutch replacement isn't the same as done on my Nissan Pick up[ Truck. It's gonna be a spendy repair. Brakes & pads are cheap, but Mini clutches are made for the rich boys to drive - especially if you drive it as intended.
