Default How do I know the temp. of my engine?

Pardon my ignorance, and laziness to read the manual, but is there a way to find out the temperature of my engine? I find it weird that the mini does not have a gauge for this like any other car. What's the story behind this? How do I know if my car is overheating (besides obvious smoke)????

I agree... i wish there was an oil temp gage and battery condition gage as a standard item. The manual says there are idiot lights... but that's it.
