OEM Roof Racks for '11 R56 JCW

Found some oem roof racks for my car. When I met the guy and asked how to install he said on his there was a clear spot on the roof where they attached. On my car those location weren't there. Are there certain cars that don't accept the roof racks? Seemed pretty crazy to me.
