Transmission Lag/Delay

Hi folks - I'm new to this forum... first post! I'm having an issue with my 2011 Mini Cooper base. I has hoping you might be able to help me figure out the potential problem.

The car runs great and has about 46k miles on the clock. I bought it brand new and haven't had any issues with it since new.

Lately, there has been a bit of a delay between shifting the car into D and the transmission actually engaging 1st gear. Sometimes it's quick and not noticeable. Other times, it takes 1 or 2 seconds and you feel a very slight "thud" when the gear engages. I think this mostly happens when its cold.

Another symptom I'm experiencing is if the car is in D and I'm driving along, then I have to stop. When I take my foot off the brake peddle to hit the gas, there is a slight 'thud'/delay when the car begins to move. It isn't always the case but happens several times a day.

The car also loves to downshift a lot as I'm driving along at low speeds (traffic, etc). I think that part may be normal though as I find myself gassing it a lot to get the car moving.

Do you all know what might be going on and how serious it may be? It doesn't have a lot of miles on it so I'm hoping this is a simple issue to resolve.

Thanks!

S
