2003 mini cooper question

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend has a 2003 mini cooper with a automatic tranny. The car whines when we drive but i could not figure out the problem. She took it to the dealer today and they said she needs a new tranny!! I dont believe it because dealers always try to screw you. The car has 60 thousand miles on it. Should i change the tranny fluid and see what happens?? Im wondering if any of you had this whine before?? tks alot

I wonder if this is normal with the CVT transmission?

RE: 2003 mini cooper question

It really all depends on the sound of the whine as well as how the car acts when it's driving and how it shifts while driving. I also have a 2003 Mini Cooper and it makes a slight whine when I turn the wheel (something's up with the power steering pump and I gotta take it to the dealer to file it under warranty). Also, mine is a 5-speed, not an automatic. But, if it's never had a transmission flush, then it would be a good idea to do so. I work at a dealership as a technician, and I know how they work. Yes, they do try to screw you over...if you go to the wrong ones or talk to the wrong people. Anyway, try the flush and see if that helps. If not, or the condition worsens, then you may have to replace the tranny. Either way, keep me posted. Hope everything works out for you.

The whine you are hearing is not the Tranny.... This would be the power Steering. Turn to the left and turn to the right and it gets louder. I don't know why it's so loud but to be honest.... everything seems to be fine with mine. it works.

Guys, the power steering is loud because it's an electric assist, not conventional power steering, there's nothing wrong it with it.;)
