A/C compressor cuts off at idle

Just got my first Mini a 2002 base and I already love driving it but do have one issue with the A/C, which is still a big deal in here in San Antonio. A/c works great, blows cold till you stop in traffic or even at a light where you sit at idle for more than about 20-30 seconds . The light on the A/c button starts flashing and the air blows warm, so I'm assuming the compressor is shutting off. You take off and as soon as you do, the light stays on steady and the air blows cold again. Is this normal function or is there a way to fix this issue? Your assistance is appreciated in this matter. Tom

Checked the fan yesterday in driveway. Started engine and checked fan was not on. Turned on A/C and checked and fan was on. Looks like it has been replaced, shinny metal.
Will have to drive and maybe when it starts flashing get out and see then if fan is on. Previous owner replaced P/S fan the day before I got car from him. I guess the access for that fan is under the car as I can not see from the top. When the car was idling yesterday in the driveway the A/c was blowing cold and light was on steady.

I believe when the light blinks it means it is low on refrigerant. Does your radiator fan kick on at all? If not, your issue could be a bad fan assembly 17-10-1-475-577. Some good info in this thread here.
