Catalytic converter ?

I just bought a 2006 Cooper S. It sounds like it has an exhaust leak at the cat. I've felt around and can't feel a leak. It sounds like crap and I'm thinking it's been hollowed out. Will it being hollowed out make it sound like it's exhaust leak? And what replacements do you recommend? Thanks
