Default Key fob only working extremely close / inside car

Hello everyone!

I'm very happy to say that as of yesterday, I am a proud mini owner! I purchased a 2004 Mini Cooper base and I'm extremely happy with the buy.

Being from 2004, I was expecting it to have a few nuances to figure out, one of them being the key fobs. I got two of them, and for reasons I cannot figure out, they only work occasionally inside and extremely close to the car.

By extremely close I mean the key has to be close enough to physically touch the car.

I've replaced both the batteries and done the following steps:

  1. Close all doors, and have all windows up.
  2. Insert key into ignition
  3. Turn it one click
  4. Turn it back
  5. Pull key out
  6. Hold down unlock (Mini wing symbol)
  7. While holding the unlock button, press lock 3 times
  8. Release the unlock button
  9. Insert key and turn it one click
I'm told that should cause the doors to lock and unlock, but it only locks them. After I do that the keys work, but still only inside the car or very close.

If anyone can give me assistance, I would be very grateful!

Have you talked to the techs at the Mini dealership?

Not yet, I just got it yesterday and wanted to make sure it wasn't something I could handle on my own.
