Over Heating! Please help!

My mom has been having issues with her car getting hot! I checked the fluids in the over flow it was bone dry so I add some to the max line. Its still getting hot. She can drive about 5 - 7 blocks and turn the car off and the fan will kick in like it is over heating. I am good with cars but cant figure out why it only gets hot when sitting still. Once she gets moving the temps come down and the car seems to be fine!

Additonal note: The trunk/hood light comes on when I unlock and open the door. It comes on for 5 seconds and goes off!

It's a normal cooling system... Check the easy stuff first , thermostat and radiator cap
Also check for leaks ... You might have a bad hose/clamp . Did you check the Oil for signs of coolant ?

Do they have electrical thermostats? I was told they might by a local inspection shop.

Running hot

Hi. I'm having a similar issue--temp gauge is on high and fan runs after i turn off the car. I was very low on coolant and put more in. Unfortunately, that did not correct the problem. Is there any simple fix. Will it hurt the car if i drive it to my mechanic, approximately 20 miles away?
Thanks for your help!:mad
