Default PS

truffing351 I did actually check the PS fluid and replaced it to with the recommended CHF fluid. I haven't had my PS go out again ever since I disconnected the fan and cleaned it up. I also removed the PS pump and emptied the old fluid and replaced it. My 2002 runs fine now. It does have a loud noise when I turn the wheel. But even my new 2011 makes that noise, given it is not as loud but it's because it is electric that it makes that noise...or so that's what i've been told. Just make sure the fan is on. It is really stupid to have the fan so close to the ground were rocks can lodge and easily ruin the fan!!

I just can't subscribe to the theory that a power steering noise is OK or in any way normal. My steering was noisy for the 2 months or so before it went out, luckily just before the warranty expired. The acting-up part of the steering failure was very sporadic. After it had gone out for me several times, I had to leave it at the dealer for a couple of days before it would recur for them. And when they did fix it, they said there was nothing wrong with the cooling fan. So all I can add from my experience is, heed the warning sound.

Default power steering

It's not that my pump has stopped, the problem is it won't stop, even with the car off. Finally disconnected the battery.

That is likely a burnt relay/fused contact

Default Power steering pump

Well, I just got back from the dealer, wallet $1000 lighter to replace a faulty steering pump - this time a different failure mode. It would not stop without disconnecting the battery. I have notified Mini and my next step is to notify the Feds. Even my dealer acknowledges the high failure rate. 51000 miles on the pump.

The more complaints egistered with the Feds the higher chance of a recall and reimbursement. So please file the complaint with NHTSA. You can eithet call or at their website.
