R50 Harmonic Damper torque
 
Greetings. 2003 Mini Cooper normally aspirated.

As part of a 60K refresh, I'm about to replace this part. Many have stated that the correct torque is 85 ft-lb (115 N-m). However, the new part instructions state to install it to 36.8 ft-lb (50 N-m), then tighten 180° further, using a new bolt.

Altho that page refers to the r55, 56, 57 engines, the recommended method is the same as that which came with my new damper (a stock replacement).

Any expert input/opinions on this? Thanks, in advance.

Believe it's 115Nm (85ft/lbs.) We have a DIY here that goes over that and lots of more information that may be useful to you.

Thanks. I've viewed the how-to at Pelican. It was very helpful. Kudos to Pelican for taking the time & effort to post that info! However, simply using 85 ft-lb may no longer be the best method for this install. The Bentley link in my OP sheds doubt..

It's probably more than coincidence that the Bentley 2-stage method was also specified in my (current) crankshaft pulley install instructions, don't you think?

I'd like to hear from someone who has tried this method.

What kit did you purchase? I can't really comment on the kit as I don't know who made it or why they changed the spec (if they did). The factory torque spec for the R50 is as listed as it's states on paper and an up to date electronic subscription for repair info per our MINI tech - Both confirm 115Nm for W10, W11 motors (R50). The R50 and R56 are not the same part, as the R50 uses an M12 and the R56 uses an M14 fastener. The fasteners are also attached in different style components. Part number for R50 11-23-7-829-906 and part number for R56 11-23-7-638-551.

Thank you, Pelican, for this response. If the up-to-date subscription says 115 Nm, then 115 Nm it is! My part is identical to the 11-23-7-829-906 part for the R50.
