03 Cooper S supercharger making noise...need advise
I took my car in to have power steering fixed under recall (thank god) and dealer is telling me the noise I hear is the supercharger and it is NOT working....they say it is not working at all!
I just bought this car a week ago....I thought the noise would be a bad tensioner or pulley.....I can feel the power and supercharger boosting....Car drives fine and has lots of power.... 1. Can the car hve enough power to run down the hwy doing 110 mph with no supercharger working? 2. What happens if you keep driving the way it is? 3. If supercharger breaks and locks up, will it damage the motor? 4. where is a good pace to buy a rebuilt supercharger? 5. is there anything way to inspect and test to see if supercharger is work and is noise or is really not working at all? Any suggestion or opinion is appreciated... I love my mini but not a good start! Thanks Edwin |
What kind of noise? Not a good start? How long have you had it?

It sounded like a roll of quarters in a dryer...once SC took a final crap....noise stopped and motor got hot.... Fast.as.Hail......I have gotten lots of help and responds on www.motoringalliance.com .....seems there are lots more knowledgeable members that are willing to help on there..I see you are a junior member like me.....I would become a member of the other form if I was you....definitely more helpful.. |
The gearing on the water pump end of your S/C sounds like it has been oil dried and gears destroyed. That end of the S/C drives your water pump via a PTO, which is why the temp is rising/ engine getting hot. You will need to have the S/C serviced, i.e. S/C removed and have the gears checked, rebuilt and oiled. This happens to many 1st Gen owners. I had to replace my S/C at 123000 miles (my gears were destroyed because the oil went away. I did all the work myself. These are good guides to doing the job if you feel comfortable turning a wrench.
