Default FOB keys vs just a key

I have 2 keys to my 04 mini cooper s..1 has a circuit board to remotely unlock/lock doors ..it has the little chip inside as well..the other key is just a key with the chip..no motherboard inside..my question to anyone is..if I take the tiny circuit board out ..does it affect the starting of the car??..a mechanic at Midas seems to think the removal of the board will not allow the car to crank..
