Help with 05 Cooper S (hard starting)
 

Having a hard start issue with my mini. It starts fine when the motor completly cools off. But if you drive it and shut it off and try to start it back up it turns over alot longer than normal and smells like gas. Was thinking it was the Engine temp sensor after doing some research. Spark plugs where just changed, injectors, and added msd coil with new wires. This issue was there before all of this was added and now it seems to be getting worse.

Any Ideas on what is causing this?

This can be a lot of things, we kind of need to narrow it down?
1. Did this issue start after you installed the injectors?
2. Is there any gas leaks around the fuel rail and injectors?
3. When you say it smells like gas do you mean that you can smell it in the car, under the hood, or if you remove some intake parts?
4. Does the car have less power than normal?
5. Do you smell gas in your oil, or does your oil level get higher as you drive?
6. Is the spark plug saturated in gas, if you pull a plug out after the car is warm and you are having issues starting it?
7. Is the car blowing out gray or black smoke out the exhaust?

Did the issue start after you installed the MSD coil, Have you tried removing the MSD coil to test it? You shouldn’t smell gas in the exhaust it means that the car is dumping to much gas into the combustion chamber or the spark plugs are not firing. You might have bad injectors or an electrical issue. Try to isolate the issue to one or the other this will cut the possibilitys in half. I would start by checking to see if you have spark when you crank the car.

Issue was there before installing msd coil. Car does have spark when turning it over. Did check fuel pressure tonight at it was at 37-39 just turning key on. What should it be at?

That is a little low it should be around 51psi at idle. Have your replaced the fuel filter recently? Also check the fuel pressure regulator and the pump.


Good pressure readings:
with power on not running ~50-52 psi.
@ Idle 42 psi.
If you rev it up it should be ~60 psi.
