Default Considering purchasing a mini as a first car for someone..

So I am considering purchasing this car for a a special someone (mom).
She has no license and I thought this would be a good learner car since it's small. I do most mechanical maintenance myself on all my cars (brakes, suspension, engine maintenance.). My question is, since I'm not too familiar with this car... Are there any common problems associated with certain model years? My main concern is anything related to the drivetrain. For example : timing chain breaks easily or engine throws xx code means I need a new $1000 sensors. How reliable are minis?

Stay well clear of Gen 1 Minis with automatic (CVT) transmission. For that matter, steer clear of a Mini in need of a clutch. Not that parts are so exotic, but labor will eat you alive. Last I heard, BMW quotes over $3000 to do a clutch.
