Gas mileage with convertibles

My wife really wants a mini cooper convertible but is concerned about the gas mileage. Why is the mileage so much less for the convertible than it is for the non-convertible? She wants to get a version of the car that will typically get her around 30MPG. She loves the convertible, but may be willing to settle for the non-convertible due to the mileage difference. Do they calculate the MPG with the top down?

Thanks,
Rob

It doesn't have anything to do with aero. The newer cars just have a much more advanced engine. You have to remember the convertables are still the "old" car. A Cooper convertable will probably get you 30mpg if she doesn't want it to be all that fast. Or, you could just wait, I'm sure the convertables with the new engines will be out in the next year or two.

Well ...it does have something to do with aero dynamic, but it's a small difference for daily driving (+- 1-2 mpg may be, in extreme case). I assume your wife will notdrive 200 mph :) I probably will worry more about disturbing wind in high speed :) That's why I always stick with coupe/hardtop :)
