Default exhaustion warning light

I've got a 2008 mini cooper and a few days a go the exhaustion like came on (yellow).

The car runs without any problems. When the light came on and on the following days the car was spending more petrol, but now iT went back to normal consumption.
I took it to the garage to turn the light off and they said they are not sure if it is just a petro problem. They said it's a exhaust vanus fault. But they didn't explain much.

I've got another car(different make) and this light comes on when I put cheap petrol (asda or tesco), sometimes the light turns off itself other times I have to take it to the garage.

I don't know if I can trust this garage as the car seams to work perfectly. Passed MOT without any problems.

Thanks
