To Fob or not to Fob

To Fob or not to Fob
Can anyone tell of the advantage of having a Fob, rather than a key with auto features?
I have a new 2014 hardtop that starts without a key (it has a 'Start Switch') with which I can start the car when the fob is in my pocket. So when I leave the Mini, I have to switch off, using the switch on the dash, then when I'm outside the car, I have to get the fob out of my pocket to lock the car doors. How stupid is that?
Unless I'm the stupid one, and there is a way to lock and unlock the vehicle without using this gigantic FOB!
