Red face General Question(s) regarding Blown Head Gasket

Hello, my name is Jacquie and I am trying to order some parts for my engine. With that I have some basic questions.

1) I have 78000 miles on the car, I have to change the head gasket, but should I changed the timing chain?

2) Would someone help me find a cheap (in price) gasket kit with a part number because my searches are coming back at 400$ or so and that seems kind of high.

3) Should I change the thermostat, and would this and the gasket be included in the kit. He said the thermostat could have caused the car to overheat.

4) I am trying to find a picture of my engine either exploded or taken apart if someone knows. I spent hours trying to get these questions dealt with and had no luck.

Thank You,
JG

Hi Jacquie,

What's the year and model? Try using RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog to find the exploded diagrams for your MINI's engine.

We also carry the correct head gasket for your MINI here: MINI Cooper - Cylinder Head & Valvetrain - Page 1. The thermostat is not included in our sets, although, if the thermostat is bad, it may cause the engine to overheat again.

The thermostats we carry range from $15-$30 (http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...WATpmp_pg2.htm) cheap insurance if it's truly faulty.

Also, take a look at the links bad venge provided, it'll answer your fourth question.

Hi,
if you intend to keep the car change the timing chain and tensionte.thermostat are a weak point and will have been the cause of the issue, also change the hose that goes to the stat.i use an independent mini expert ex bmw mechanic.i would not recommend on his advice using anything but genuine parts, copy parts are cheap for a reason quality.will cost more however it will give you peace of mind the parts where developed for the car not a part that fits many cars.your call but a few $ extra is well worth it as it will help resale
