Jerks between 1st and 2nd gear when cold

I just got a used 2007 Mini Cooper last week. I have now come to realize that when the car is cold (just been started) it jerks between first and second gear. After a few minutes once the car has warmed up though, the car shifts completely smoothly. Does anyone have an idea for as to why this is happening?
