Lights, always the lights

Lights, always the lights
Hi,
I have a 2003 Mini (not the S) and have had intermittent headlight problems. Low beam on passenger side went out, had garage change it, and when they got done the high beam was pointing at the ground. grrr... I went in and replaced the passenger side hi beam bulb, closed the hood, and the *drivers's* side low beam went out. Figured it must have something to do with the high beam passenger bulb, so I went back in and replaced it with the same one the garage used -- same problem (driver's side low beam out).
Is this just a coincidence that the driver's side low was affected by something I did on the passenger's side? or is this making sense to someone far smarter than I?
Come to think of it, when the garage changed the passenger side low, they had to do it twice -- they said the first bulb (factory sealed) didn't work.
thanks for any thoughts...
