Performance Air Filters

Quick question, is it okay to just remove the standard air filter and box and replace it with a K&N cone filter? Or do I have to have a custom made heat shield? Thanks :)

Use a K&N drop in for minor gains. Larger gains get the Cold air intake or the JCW intake

trying to use the cone without a sheild will lose performance

This is my first MINI so I have to ask the experienced owners out there...is there any concern with a CAI pulling in water when it's raining or through a carwash? I ask because my friend supercharged his Infinity G35 and had it for one hour because he ran through a car wash and the CAI pulled in water and locked his motor up and destroyed his supercharger.

That I understand. Is there no way for water to get through the intake source underneath the windshield wipers. BTW my friends G35's intake was right behind his head lights, so the water came in via the hood.

Suggestions?

Any suggestions on whether I should use an Alta intake or DDMworks?
