2004 Mini Cooper S 6Speed Manual Blown

I have a 2004 S with 208K on it! I have owned it for about 7 years, and use it as a daily driver. For the most part is has been reliable, of coarse I have had to maintain it well to get that many miles out of it. My son and dil were driving it home the other day and it started acting up. It would go in any year, and the clutch felt fine. However even though it was in gear it acted like it was in neutral, and would not pull itself, so the were stuck on the side of the road. I rescued them with my trailer and brought it home. I jacked up the front end, checked, and changed the fluid even though it was full. No metal particles were noted. With the front end up , I could put it in any year and it would spin the left wheel slowly, and the right would spin fast. You could hold the left and keep it from spinning. Slave cylinder looked and acted fine. Any ideas, or should I start disassembly? Anybody DIY rebuilding these units? Any experience with rebuilders? I actually have a spare, with ONLY 150k on it, not sure if I should try it or not.
