mini still having clutch problems?
 

I have a mini on my mind and hope to get a convertible soon.
There was a rash of clutch problems with some of the mini's that was under discussion on the "car guy's" talk show.
I enjoy driving my Beetle TDI and currently have 238k on the odometer and still rolling strong.
If I were to look at engine/transmission options to maximize mileage for long commutes, what would you suggest?
research shows me the base model Mini is the best for mileage, what about manual verses auto?

Any years to avoid if I go used?
