Sadly, this manual is from a newer version of the car than mine. My display is above the steering column and includes only speed and temperature. I do recall that my manual has a similar lack of explanation of how to make changes.

Ah you have the older system, its just a simple computer option, but the same thing . Yep , its a trip to the dealership anyway for programming , those little people icons next to the statements are dealer optioned programs, on Gen 1 MINIs that how it was. On Gen 2 MINI 2007+ things were more independent.
