It sounds like Unreliable had an unfortunate experience, there should have been multiple indications that the cooling fan had failed and the car for sure should have posted a warning indicator once a certain temperature threshold had been crossed. It sounds to me like the first failure was caused by the same issue, and the shop missed it. Overall they are very reliable vehicles. Any manufacturer is going to have some vehicles with issues. Unreliable's issue could have been just a small inconvenience if the servicing shop would have paid attention. In his case MINI and the servicing dealer should pay for his repairs in my opinion. The head gasket blew the first time because of a cooling issue, and they fixed the head gasket, but not the cooling issue. Back to skromfols, MINIs are more reliable now than ever since they have moved to the BMW Twin Power modular engine architecture. Th 2011+ MINIs are also pretty reliable with their revised PSA Group + BMW Prince engines. The 2007-2010 MINIs can be extremely reliable too if properly maintained and a good eye is kept on the oil. What killed a lot of the 2007-10 vehicles was MINIs original recommendation of 15k mile oil service intervals. Generally those who chose to service sooner had little issues with these MINI's.
