Sudden limp mode and hard stuttering at high RPM
Hello all, I have a baffling issue with my beautiful 2006 Mini cooper S convertible. She runs beautifully until I hit 5500-6000 RPM, at which point the engine stutters hard and goes into limp mode, triggering EML, Service engine, traction control, ABS. It doesn't feel like power cutting out, it feels like the engine is being dramatically slowed suddenly. The only code present is P1688. When I power cycle the car, for the next few drives she will stutter less dramatically at 3500-4000 rpm, which is obnoxious. I've checked out the throttle body, it opens and closes smoothly and doesn't seem to stick. Will replace soon anyway. Something that worries me is this car has a history of electrical problems due to a previous owner attempting to install remote start, and removing the ECU to do so rather violently. There was a misfire issue due to this for a while that was resolved. Only other problem related to electrical i've noticed is the Highbeams trigger the traction control and ABS lights. Essentially I'm wondering if this is an electrical issue, and if so, how that would only happen at high RPM. if ANYBODY has experienced this or something similar or has information to share, im all ears. Next step is probably an AutoWerkes diagnostic which is $$$
