Brake job... we need some help
 

First off...
Hello,my name is Matt and I am new to the forums. I recently embarked on the task of replacing the brake pads. The fronts went without a hitch, however the rear brakes proved a bit more complicated. We cannot compress the rear pistons. I have searched the internet and found a tool that turns the piston while compressing it. Do you really need this tool to complete the job? Is there a way to make a home made version? I really dont want to pay international shipping and Germany's Vat if I don't have to.

Thanks, this is pretty urgent!!! The mini is on jackstands as we speak!!!

turns out that the job was a ton easier with the right tools. The mini is back on the ground and driving beautifully.

By "right tools" do you mean you used the factory designed tool purchased from a German source?

I would love to seea fewpic's. Can you post a few?

I have a question on brake repairs. I have a 2003 Mini with about 38,000 miles on it. I recently took this car in to the Mini dealer in Houston, Tx for a brake job and was told that the brakes had 4 mm left on the pads, they were designed to be replace around 3mm. Was also told this brake job would run approx $950. They stated that both pads and rotors were designed to wear at the same rate and the repair included new rotors and pads.

This seems to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard and if true seems to be a serious design flaw in the metallurgy of the rotor.

Can anyone verify what I was told?

Just buy aftermarket pads and rotors and do it yourself, it will probably be like $150 max and you'll have better brakes anyways.

hey guys, what do u mean by the "right tools"? im having a problem w/ the rear brakes as well, can't get the piston to go in! can u guys help me? Im new to Mini, since is my gf's car... i'll be very thanksful...

I've not had to do rears yet but fronts were compressed with a "c clamp"

The rears you have to twist them back in because of the parking brake... a HUGE flat screw driver will do the trick.
