Default run flat tires

Run flat tires. Anyone have any experience with these? My 07 came only with these and the sales manager practically begged me to get an insurance policy for the tires and rims. Winnipeg is pot hole country and they have had many issues of people hitting a bad pothole, wrecking the tire (which apparently cannot be fixed - even for a nail in the tire - so they say) plus rim damage on top. Very expensive to replace a tire and rim. Insurance was $700 for 3 years and being someone of an obsessive anxious type person I went for it just for my own piece of mind. I think it is a total rip off and bad design if this is all accurate. Can one replace the run flats when they are done without new rims too? The computer system is hooked up so that it tells you if you have a bad tire. What kind of invention is this. If I have no problem in the 3 years I won't get it again but was quite ticked off about this whole deal. Anyone see Fargo and the "truecoat" part. That is exactly how I felt. Am waiting for the first BMW survey on the car so I can let some more steam off (if in fact they send them).

Yeah, I didn't get the insurance and promptly ditched the factory wheels but I've been running OEM run-flats for 20,000+ miles with no problems. There are wheels out there that are compatible with the tire pressure monitoring system.

Thx, I have 30 days to cancel and think I will as if this really turns out to be an issue I would replace tires. Anyone know if rims would have to be replaced as well ie are they compatable with non run flats. Thx

You can put any appropriately sized tire on your rim, run flat or not.

The tire pressure monitoring system is not similar to GM equipped vehicles with air pressure sensors in the wheels. The system MINI uses is based off the ABS Brake wheel sensors and simply alerts you if there is a different size tire rolling under you. It is basically a light that tells you you have a flat and not a low tire...

That's how the R53 is. The R56 does use the in wheel sensors.
