Default 2013 r58 base model coupe using oil

My wife's 2013 non turbo coupe has started using oil.
We bought this Cooper as a 3K mile CPO and it now has 22K miles on it.
I change oil and filter every 5K miles using Mobile1 synthetic.
It has not been driven hard and has been well cared for.
The car started to use oil several thousand miles back and appears to be using about a quart between oil changes. No signs of a leak anywhere or smoke from tail pipes.
What could cause this oil loss and where is it going if there are no signs of leaks or smoke from tail pipes?

Normal for the car to use oil, means the car is lubricated,if not using oil means metal on metal and wearing parts away, much cheaper to top up with oil than rebuild the motor
