Default Lost compression in one cyl

While driving on the highway at 75mph my mini S started losing power. When I got home I checked compression and number 4 had 0 compression.
I have to pull the head to see if it is piston, valves or rings. But was wondering if the variable timing might have caused it. It's only the one cylinder.
Any ideas what it might be?
