Default 04 Overheating

Hi,
My nephew has an 04 that he inherited. The original owner battled overheating and eventually just parked it and got another vehicle.
After a year or so my nephew got it. He filled all fluids and got a new battery. He was driving and it started overheating so he stopped and let it cool down.
Once it did he tried cranking it, and kept trying until the battery died so he had it towed home. He tried to jump it off and even put another battery in but
from that point on it only clicked under the hood. What to check? My dad thinks the starter may be burned out. Is there a safety switch somewhere that may have tripped?
