How expensive / serious is needing a new clutch and flywheel ?
2003 Mini Cooper S . About 135K miles.
Needs new clutch and new flywheel . Engine revs high. Car will not move under power. Wondering whether to get this car if owner wants around a $1000 ? All depends on just how expensive it would be to replace the clutch and flywheel with new OEM.
Is the engine reving high due to the issue with the flywheel or clutch?
Thanks

2002 MINI Cooper S - cracked Transmission
I thought I needed a clutch and flywheel myself.
I’m now on the hook for $700 in labor after my shop found a cracked transmission on my 5-speed manual with only 101,000mi.
the mechanic doesn’t know why an internal crack appeared. Not the case!
now I can’t find a used one anywhere and it will be $4700USD just to get my car back on the road

@gnome,
Shops in my area wanted around $2500 for a clutch job. I elected on a $360 valeo clutch/flywheel and did it myself. Lets just say, that the shops earn their money. On my schedule, it took 5 months to complete, with some minor additional parts. It was a helluva job to do.
Are you not certain its the clutch? If its not too far gone, if you drive the car without pushing it hard, and it drives somewhat normal, and if you give it some throttle, and you she the RPMs start slipping upwards at around 3000rpm, and speed doesnt change much... its probably the clutch. It depends on how far gone it is when the slipping starts. It will eventually just go nowhere. There is also the smell. If you have had the experience of the smell of burning electronics... thats kind of the smell. The clutch material seems to be pretty similar to that which circuit boards are made of. I smell a very similar odor if something electronic is starting to lose its smoke.
Props to MINI mod for his videos. They were very good.
Great tips and techniques. Couldnt have done it without this help. May as well do pan gasket, all ball joints, and suspension bushings too. You would have all of that out.
Actually, its been less than a week I've been driving it again.
