Default Mini Cooper Transmission

Hello,
I purchased a Mini Cooper August 2004 brand new from Mini Yaletown. Now, 5 years later with 67,000 kms on it, I am told that I have to get a new transmission. This is going to be costing me $5,000! I can't believe that I have to get a new transmission already!!
I have googled and blogged and saw that a lot of people are having this problem.
Can anyone tell me anything that will be useful?
I am contacting Mini Canada and Mini Cooper Yaletown about this problem tomorrow.

Jeanette

Just looking around the forums here, so I realize this is old. Anyone else have this issue? The Mini I just got has almost 70k miles. I did get a two year warranty on it, so I'm not too concerned right now. Thanks!
