I just ran across this picture online.

i think the painted fenders look good.

but why don't i see more minis with that done?

There are two ways to do it , they sell aftermarket replacement wheel arches
Or others have taken the stock ones and sanded and then used high fill primer to smooth out the grain and then paint them
