Default USB AUX connection

One of the things I was pretty excited about, with my new Mini, was the USB/AUX connection into the radio. You see up until now all my cars have had really basic CD/Radio's, which is kind of strange because I'm a musician and listen to lot's of music in the car. I have just been plugging my ipod into some in-ear headphones and enjoying the music that way. So having the controls on the steering wheel and listening through some pretty good speakers is appealing.

My first attempt to hook up my old iPod didn't work, but I fooled around a little be with the standard cable and it just stated working. No special USB/AUX - Y - cable for 90 bucks. I was good for about a week and then acquired a newer iPod Touch and thought I would give it a go. Plugged it in and nothing. It didn't charge and it wouldn't connect. So I plugged in my old iPod again and now it didn't work. I thought I must have blown a circuit or something. Took the car to the dealer and they told my the problem was my cable and need to lay down the $95 for one of the fancy cables.. I said it had been working for a week, and they said, "no it couldn't have". But I swear it did!!!

Anyway, I borrow a fancy cable from the parts department and, you guessed it, it worked!!

This just doesn't make sense to me. I deal with music electronics all the time and logically this isn't logical!

Can anybody explain what may be going on here???
