Do Minis have a general problem with head gaskets. I think I have a head gasket problem as I am losing cooltant and there is no visible drips. I am planning to do a compression test on the engine.

If you take the car to a quality radiator shop, they can test for hydrocarbons in the antifreeze. IMHO, that it a much more surefire way to confirm a head gasket leak than is a compression test.
