We actually disassemble the whole thing as per this article; then unscrewed the "shifter box" and took it out - it was needed to remove the center console to accomplish this. We opened the box. It needs to be opened carefully since there are a couple of springs that will immediately jump all over. Inside the box, there's a hard plastic, conic shaped, piece that allows the positioning and fwd-bwd stepping of the shifter. It was broken at several points, like smashed... It looked like it was forced somehow into gear. Anyway, we managed to glue it together and reassemble it again. It works fine. I hope it will hold while I get the replacement.
