Problem with outside temp gauge

After I little issue that i had last night (the fender came off), my outside temp gauge is reading -40. I am wondering if I need to re-set it or something. Does anyone have an idea what this could me?

drive around for about 5 miles, it will recalibrate.

The fender or the bumper? The temp sensor is behind the lower grill in the bumper and if it comes unplugged it will read -40.
